In a series of self-truths Daniela Yohannes blends personal, historical and imagined histories and realities, using family photographs, hieroglyphics, maps and other found material to create new images that each represent a visual and symbolic layering of her heritage. These collages are the result of an ongoing process of archiving, activating, re-dressing and preserving the relationships and stories they depict to centralise them within wider historical narratives around the Horn of Africa. Yohannes’ use of family photography enables her to explore other spheres of existence, whilst offering up her experiences in search of shared ones with other diasporic peoples. This constellation is one possible mapping of the journey Yohannes’ is imagining for her ancestors across space and time.
