This body of work represents a deep exploration of identity and the politics of race. The Fall: A Woman’s Descent into the Unconscious delves into the emotional power of dreams and the unconscious. I am drawn to the richness of dreams, using their emotional depth to confront themes of fear, anxiety, desire, and euphoria. This series also examines the broader experiences of Black women navigating a complex social landscape.
The lone Black female figure falling symbolizes various states of existence: as a woman, as a Black woman, and as an outsider confronted by a gaze of antipathy. So, while her fall represents multiple sites of systemic oppression—political, societal, religious, and economic—she remains graceful, and whole in herself, reflecting the dignity and endurance of Black women.
At the core of this work lies my vision of a world where solace and joy prevail, a world of tolerance and kindness—a personal utopia. The Fall is, fundamentally, a human journey; my personal prism to untangle universal truths of being”.
